Paws 4 Pets at Bonelli Park
Since 2001, the Inland Valley Humane Society and Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals have been presenting an annual fundraiser walk at Bonelli Park. The 15th Paws 4 Pets walk on May 21 is expected to attract an enthusiastic crowd of dog owners and their furry family members to enjoy a 1.5-mile walk by the lake and through the park on a Saturday morning.
Special Events Coordinator Stephanie Mann said that last year the event drew more than 1,000 people. She said they are expecting the same this year and with hundreds of dogs. The goal for the non-profit organization is to continue towards its goal of raising $100,000 towards saving animals.
“Our goal is to just to continue our ‘getting to zero’ strategy, which is aiming to end euthanasia of healthy and treatable animals by the year 2020,” said Mann. “All the funds raised will be instrumental in helping us achieve that goal.”
For people who don’t have dogs, the event has recently included shelter dogs available to take out for walks. Mann said that event organizers receive messages from people wanting to attend the walk but they don’t have dogs. They hope to increase the number of shelter dogs for people to walk, but additional canine behavior assessments are required to determine which dogs to include in the walks. Currently there are four dogs scheduled to participate. Mann said that the activity originated as a way to get animals out of the shelter for the morning for some fun time and social time at the park. Now it looks to be a popular addition to the event.
