Learn how you can “go green” at home and work

Rancho Cucamonga, CA – It’s a major step in teaching Southern Californians about sustainable choices. The newly opened Frontier Project, founded by the Cucamonga Valley Water District, has the mission of showing that sustainable design can be economical, efficient, and inviting by demonstrating practical solutions for living and working environments. In a region whose population totaled 4.1 million at the end of 2008, it couldn’t come at a better time.

The Frontier Project opened to the public in November 2009, with a Grand Opening and Community Open House. The Project is a community resource, where homeowners and business owners can learn how to implement environmental sustainability into their home or business by touring the building or attending workshops.

The Frontier Project is one-acre site with a 14,000-square-foot demonstration building and landscape, featuring the latest technologies in water, energy, and site conservation, including recycled materials, a live “green” roof, water cistern, cool tower and solar chimneys, solar panels, and more. The Frontier Project expects to achieve LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum certification, the highest level afforded by the U.S. Green Building Council, later this year.

“Being an environmental steward is a group responsibility,” commented Randall Reed, Chairman of the Frontier Project Foundation. “It can’t be the responsibility of just a few people, but it needs to be something we are all mindful of and working toward.”

The Frontier Project aims to make achieving environmental sustainability easy by all. By demonstrating a variety of products, technologies, and systems, the Frontier Project hopes that visitors will decide what “fits” them best, and implement these strategies in their own lives.

The Frontier Project is open to the public, Monday- Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. for self-guided tours. The second Saturday of each month, the Frontier Project invites the community to attend the Sustainable Saturday Series, made possible thanks to the Bank of America Foundation. The next workshop is on Saturday, March 13, and will feature Creating an Edible Garden.

On Saturday, April 10, the Frontier Project, Cucamonga Valley Water District, and San Bernardino County Supervisor Paul Biane, Second District, partner to bring you an Earth Day Celebration. Earth Day will include an Environmental Fair, activities, and entertainment for the family, refreshments, and more.
