How long have you guys lived in Upland?
We’ve lived in Upland for about 40 years.
Why did you move here?
We were both born in San Antonio Community Hospital here in Upland.
How do you like Upland ?
Upland is a wonderful place populated by kind, intelligent people. It’s a great place to live and raise a family.
What could be done to improve the city?
Upland is very nice, as is the Downtown Upland area. The existing restaurants and businesses are marvelous and unique. The gazebo/ roundabout is so welcoming and picturesque. But a bit of revitalization, similar to the Packing House district in Claremont, would be perfect here and would be a great improvement.
How did you two meet?
Glorie: We met in 1992 in the lobby of Tarbell, Realtors, Upland office. Rick was at the front desk and I as a new Realtor arriving to be on staff. I was wearing a purple silk dress, too many pearls, and a big bow in my hair. Rick sported the thickest glasses I had ever seen which were only slightly overshadowed by his haircut, which was the worst! His bright blue eyes and elegant good manners trumped the glasses and the hair. He was very thin, but witty and smart like a survivor with a sense of humor.
What made you fall in love with her?
Rick: She was very pretty, super smart, and hilariously funny.
Tell us one thing your wife does that annoys you?
Rick: I’ll have to get back to you on that one… as long as it’s off the record.
Tell us one thing your husband does that annoys you?
Glorie: He does not do anything that annoys me. He is a doll with the patience of a saint. We call him the Zen Master. He even has a USB drive that the twins gave him in the shape of YODA, a nod to his love of Star Wars and a representation of the calm he manages to maintain in all circumstances.
What do you two do for a living?
We are full time professional Realtors at Tarbell, Realtors in Upland. “We care about our clients” is the motto of our partnership, and we are absolutely devoted to those whom we represent in real estate transactions. We make every effort to provide the greatest service imaginable. Our identical twin daughters, Marissa and Julianna Stoap, are also Realtors in southern California. After graduating from the University of Southern California, they came into real estate as their own partnership and now have their desks right next to ours. Having been raised on Real Estate and participating with us in open houses and other community activities from a young age, they saw firsthand how exhilarating and interesting the real estate market can be. Though we are separate teams, we enjoy working on transactions together as much as possible.
Has the recent bad economy affected your family? If so, how?
Yes. Now, we have to work 8 days a week instead of 7… for less money.
Tell us a little bit about your family
What do you guys like to do together?
Our family is extremely close; as you can tell since we all work in real estate together. We have lived in Upland since the twins and their older sister, Heather, were babies, and have always enjoyed time together walking on Euclid with our huskies and going up to Mt. Baldy. Glorie Lee also grew up in the area, attending Claremont High School (like Marissa and Julianna after her) and even Pomona College. One of our favorite things to do together is go to the movies. We are all movie buffs, especially Glorie Lee! We regularly frequent the theaters in Rancho Cucamonga, Upland, Ontario, and Claremont, and are usually the first to give friends and colleagues the movie reviews. Whether we see an Oscar worthy drama or a less-than-impressive romantic comedy, we love to discuss movies after we see them: the most tear-jerking moments, the funniest lines, or the most ridiculous plot twists. In fact, Glorie Lee can usually predict Academy Award winners the minute she sees them. One of our other favorite things to do is what we call “Taco Tuesday.” It’s not always on Tuesday, and it’s not always Tacos, but it’s just our way of making sure to get together for dinner once a week, hang out at home and watch one of our favorite TV shows. This year Marissa got the whole family watching “The Bachelor.” Don’t tell anyone!
Do you consider yourselves an “average family?”
In many ways we aspire to be extraordinary and an above average family. We always try to be giving, loving and grateful to one another. We also are able to work together without driving each other crazy, so that’s pretty unique! It is really a joy being able to spend time together professionally, because we have all gotten to know each other in a new way.
How did the kids affect your life when they showed up?
Having the girls was a profoundly spiritual experience followed by no sleep for 2 years … followed by tons of joy and laughter. They keep us young!
Tell us something unique or special about your kids.
Heather is an excellent equestrian and a true animal lover. She is also an elementary school teacher, and can frequently be seen teaching her class through music, by playing her guitar and incorporating that into her lessons. Marissa and Julianna are identical twins, which automatically makes them unique. Because people have always approached to ask about being twins, they have learned to love communicating. Not a day goes by when they don’t have to answer “Do you have ESP?” or “If I pinch her, can you feel it?” As a result they decided they wanted to be on the other side of the questioning, and both went to USC getting their degrees in broadcast journalism. Their endeavors in broadcasting have included hosting a radio show in Simi Valley, conducting TV interviews with celebs like Coolio and Tom Green, and hosting live events ranging from BMX to monster truck races. Still, because they were raised on real estate and love to help people, they were drawn back to a career as partners at Tarbell, Realtors. Though they are very different, even opposite, in many ways, they love the unique bond they share as twins and being able to work and have fun together at every chance they get. Also unique, Marissa and Julianna both play a great game of poker. Texas Hold’em being their game of choice, both have placed in the top 3 of several tournaments in Las Vegas. Maybe the blonde, 24-year-old, twin thing throws everybody off!
Tell us something your parents do that makes you mad.
The only thing our parents do to make us mad is that they sometimes give away the end of movies that we still plan to see. Spoiler alert!
If you could move anywhere in the world, where would it be?
A beach home on the California coast, or maybe Paris.
Do you like our magazine?
Yes.
Tells us what you like about it.
We love 909 Magazine! We like that it’s delivered for free to our doorstep. It is also one of the most relevant magazines to the local area.
